Establishment of 1st NUAA International Alumni Association in Nepal

Kathmandu, March 4th, 2017

Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics established its 1st International Alumni association in Nepal with an inauguration ceremony held in Hotel Himalaya, Lalitpur.  The ceremony started with a welcome video speech by Prof. Jin Quanyuan, Dean of College of International Education followed with the video of NUAA campus.  Mr. Yuan Lei representing NUAA, and Captain Zhou Yongzhe, an Alumni of NUAA currently working for Himalaya Airlines as Vice Director of Air Operations, officially inaugurated the ceremony by lighting a lamp in a Nepalese traditional ritual. Nearly 50 NUAA Alumni participated in the ceremony.

NUAA started its International program in 2005, and the first batches of students were mostly from Nepal.  Currently,there are around 1,000 international students at NUAA representing over 70 countries.

After the opening ceremony, a workshop was organized where the Nepali Alumni, who are currently working in different fields ranging from aviation to entrepreneurship, shared their struggles and ideas among each other. Mr. Binod Thapa, who is from NUAA 2008 batch and currently working at Nepal Airlines as a Flight Safety and Quality Assurance Engineer, talked about the current problems in Nepalese aviation sector and discussed solutions to ratify it. Mr. Ashish Manandhar of NUAA 2006 batch discussed the progress of his organization, Buddha Airline Pvt. Ltd., where he works as the Maintenance Planning Engineer. 

Ms. Sarita Raut , NUAA’s International Alumni’s first lady entrepreneur briefly introduced her company and discussed how she collaborated with her NUAA batch mates from 2007 batch, Mr. Santosh Bhusal (2007) and Mr. Srikant Bhattarai , to lead a successful venture. She also voiced how the education she gained at NUAA played an important role in helping her to transform herself from an engineer to a successful entrepreneur.  Ms. Raut co-founded her construction company, Swift Builders Pvt. Ltd., with her batch mates in 2014 that now has an annual turnover of 1.3 million USD and increasing. Similarly, Mr. Sanjay Gyawali also talked about the progress and challenges of establishing his company, Aiden Engineering Pvt. Ltd., which was recently priced at half-a-million USD.


The ceremony also included selection of NUAA-Nepal Alumni Association representatives from five referent field of engagement of NUAA Alumni in Nepal- Aviation Technical Support, Aviation Maintenance, Academia, Entrepreneurial and NUAA-Abroad.

At the end of the workshop, Asst. Professor Sudip Bhattrai was voted unanimously as the president of NUAA-NEPAL Alumni Nepal. He is the academic faculty for aerospace science and engineering at Tribhuvan University, and also has been informally collaborating with projects at the NUAA College of Energy and Power Engineering. Mr. Bhattrai also discussed his work at his university and invited NUAA Alumni to collaborate in research around the various fields of their interests.

Nepalese Alumni from abroad also had the opportunity to join the event online via Skype, and witnessed the official handing of the Alumni flag to the association’s president.

The NUAA-Nepal Alumni vowed to help consult future graduates for the right direction and will communicate with NUAA for further improvements and collaboration in different sector.
